Three Decades of Getting Our Hands Dirty

How it started

Ash Landscaping was founded in 1989 by Colin Ash, working out of Astbury in Cheshire. What began as a plants-and-turf landscaping business built on a genuine knowledge of soil, planting and growth has, over almost four decades, grown into a full landscaping and groundworks contractor working on everything from a single back garden to multi-acre commercial sites.

That grounding in horticulture still shapes how we work today. Before you can build a driveway, lay a lawn, or plant a wildflower meadow, you need to understand the ground underneath it and that's where thirty-seven years pays off.

From gardens to groundworks

As the business grew, so did the scale of the work. Alongside residential planting, patios and driveways, Ash Landscaping now delivers groundworks projects of every size, from a single drainage fix in a back garden to ground clearance and landscaping across a multi-unit development.

Over the last few years, that growth has taken us onto site with several nationwide development companies, delivering soft landscaping and groundworks for their retail and commercial schemes here in Cheshire and the North West. It's the same trade, the same standards, just a bigger site and a stricter programme.

A network built on getting it right

No one contractor can be an expert in everything, and we don't pretend to be. Ash Landscaping works alongside a trusted network of specialists to make sure every part of a project is handled properly:

  • An RHS-affiliated horticulturist, who advises on planting schedules and specialist planting once the hard landscaping is complete

  • Specialist tree surgeons for felling, pruning and tree works beyond routine landscaping

  • Weed control specialists for sites that need it done properly and safely

  • Habitat specialists, for projects where biodiversity and ecology are part of the brief

Doing it properly, not just cheaply

Colin has seen plenty of quick fixes fail, drainage systems that wash out within a couple of years, paving jointing that lets water in and frost pushes back out, quotes that look cheap until the work has to be done again. Ash Landscaping is built around the opposite approach: use techniques that are proven, even where they're less fashionable than a modern alternative, and price the job to be done once.

That's as true of a French drain in a Cheshire back garden as it is of a soft landscaping package on a retail development, do it right, and it lasts.

Committed to doing it cleanly, too

Ash Landscaping runs one of the first solar-charged electric micro excavators in the region — a JCB 8008E CTS, charged from home solar panels and battery storage. It means zero emissions on site, none of the noise restrictions that come with a diesel machine, and no risk of fuel spills on sensitive ground. It's a small part of a bigger approach: build things properly, and build them with an eye on what comes next.
